C.Melchers, which built the world’s largest CNG fueling station in Singapore last year, has begun converting 1,000 Toyota Wish cars to CNG for the taxi operator TransCab, Singapore’s second-largest CNG customer. All vehilces will use xperion Type IV fuel tanks.
Type IVs – ‘a Third of the Weight’
Melchers is using Type IV all-composite cylinders from Germany’s xperion, and bi-fuel kits from OMVL, with Emer fueling receptacles. It is the largest-ever conversion of OEM vehicles using Type IV tanks, says Melchers oil and gas manager Gilbert von der Aue. The new Wish cars have 2.0-liter engines, compared with 1.8-liter engines in previous versions. The old CNG conversions have Type I steel tanks (from Brazil’s Cilbras) holding 100 liters of methane, the new ones have 90 and 38-liter cylinders for a total of 128. “The new tanks are a third of the weight of the old tanks, which weighed 110 kilos,” von der Aue says. Single-fill range is about 340 kilometers, or 210 miles, as compared with 270 kilometers for the older vehicles.
