NGVA Europe was the organiser of the 1st international seminar A Trans-European Road to Renewable Mobility during the EU-funded project the GasHighWay (www.gashighway.net), which was held on 28th January 2010 in Malmö, Sweden. The conference was attended by more than 80 people from more than 20 different countries.

Special guest speaker Peter Schrum, President of the German Federal Association of Biogenic and Renewable fuels e.V. said: This is the best expert conference on Biofuels and other available technologies like LNG and Dual Fuel I have heard in the last fifteen years!

Through a series of 15 presentations by the GasHighWay partners and various NGVA Europe members on best practice examples from across Europe, attendees learnt about latest NGV technologies and activities, as well as future challenges that must be solved to increase the growth and acceptance of NGVs in the European marketplace.

All presentations can be downloaded here or via the project website www.gashighway.net.

Tytti Laitinen from Jyväskylä Innovation Ltd. (Finland), who is also the coordinator of the GasHighWay, described the project in her opening speech as follows: “The first specific objective is to raise the demand for NGVs. The second is to raise the supply of NG/biomethane, by boosting the investments in the establishment of a network of CNG filling stations. And the third aim is to promote the uptake of biogas production and upgrading technology.”

Malmo_Bild_2The European Union (EU) has set a 10% binding minimum target for the market share of fuels from renewable sources in road transport, including gaseous fuels (!), to be observed by all Member States in 2020. “Upgraded biogas (biomethane) and compressed natural gas (CNG) offer an environmental friendly alternative to the conventional vehicle fuels in use today. And we are glad to see that the overall political climate in European fuel policy is increasingly acknowledging the great benefits we have to offer”, Manuel Lage, General Manager of NGVA Europe said.

In his closing words, the Chairman of the conference and Marketing & Communications Manager of NGVA Europe, Matthias Maedge pointed out: “The great excitement about the GasHighWay and also NGVA Europe, the only European Association that promotes the interests of the NGV related industry, shows that NGVs in Europe are a driving force, which will substantially influence sustainable transport of the future.”
