Last 17th November 2010, Madrid’s city Mayor Alberto Ruiz Gallardón inaugurated the biggest European refuelling and maintenance station for Natural Gas Vehicles. The total investment reaches 47 M€, and the main objective of the project is to give service to the more than 400 CNG buses that the Municipal Transport Company of Madrid (EMT) is currently operating.
The installation will have with 1.200 workers in the different areas of the 55.000 m2 complex:
- 9 tunnels for vehicle wash
- 9 independent refuelling lines, with compressor capacities of 2.700 Nm3 each
- Mechanic workshops
- Electric workshops
- Maintenance and inspection workshops
This cutting-edge technology will make possible to refuel and clean the buses (exterior and interior of the vehicle) in 4 minutes.

With this initiative, the Mayor emphasized on their commitment to make Madrid a cleaner and more sustainable city, with the objective of preserving both, the inhabitants health, and the environment. It should be noted that the EMT gives service to more than 425 million users per year. This installation will make it possible to save more than 54 tonnes NOx/year and 4 tonnes PM/year trough the use of CNG buses, with the consequent improvement of the air quality in the city. The Mayor also talked about plans to expand the NGV fleet to reach 800 CNG buses by 2011.
This new NGV refuelling stations is the biggest in Europe, both in fleet size and compression capability, and one of the largest in the world with nine simultaneous refuelling streets that can serve 180 buses per hour.
The project was carried out in collaboration with NGVA Europe Board member Gas Natural Fenosa, who is also the responsible for the operation of the 170 GWh / year facility. Gas Natural Fenosa expects to have a turnover of 60 million euros over the duration of the contract, which covers 12 years.
In Spain there are currently more than 2,900 natural gas vehicles, primarily heavy urban vehicles such as refuse collection trucks or buses. A total of 26 localities already have supply stations, among which are Barcelona, Burgos, Madrid, Salamanca, Sevilla and Valencia.
