NGVA Europe introduces first CNG vehicle in Brussels

CNG_Sign
NGVA Europe, the Natural & bio Gas Vehicle Association, drives the first CNG powered vehcile in Brussels, a Fiat Punto Evo Natural Power. Communications & EU Affairs Manager, Matthias Maedge, now drives the vehicle, which was provided by the German NGVA Europe Board member Erdgas Mobil, in the Brussels capital region, in order to show policy makers and Commission representatives that CNG (Compressed Natural Gas and biomethane) is an already existent and the only real alteranitve to oil-derived fuels. The Fiat Punto Evo Natrual Power saves 25 % CO2 and has low running costs of less than 4 Euros on 100 km. The Punto Evo is one out of several ex-factory models offered by NGVA Europe Board member Fiat and has excellent riding qualities as Matthias Maedge confirms.

The whole band with of all availabe OEM models (cars, vans, buses and trucks) can now be seen in the newly created NGVA Europe NG Vehilce Catalogue:

Brussels is continously suffering from air quality problems (see http://www.picdepollution.be/) as there are only diesel and petrol vehicles in circulation. NGVA is now proud to contribute its part to cleaner air in Brussels by driving a CNG vehilce emitting close to cero NOx and insignificant particualte matter.

The Fiat Punto Evo has 70 hp in CNG mode and is able to cover a distance of more than 300 km on CNG. All light-duty vehicles powered by Methane are still equipped with with an extra petrol tank, as the Methane refuelling infrastructure can be fragmentary in parts of Europe. There are already 4 refuelling stations in Belgium, whereof the last one was inaugurated last 17th February in Halle (south of Brussles) by DATS 24, the Belgian filling station operator of the Colruyt Group (go to press release). Three other Electrabel stations arready exist in Brugge, Antwerpen and Mechelen (north of Brussels). All Electrabel stations have been constructed by NGVA Europe member Schwelm.

The CNG filling stations in Mechelen and Halle are very convenient for NGV drivers to fill up if they want to use their vehicle in Brussels (20-30 minutes outside of the centre). But more stations by Dast 24 will be opened soon and close gaps in the Belgian CNG filling station map, which will it also making more attractive for NGV drivers from neighbouring countries to visit Belgium using their Methane vehicle. Another CNG filling station of DATS 24 station will be opened soon in Anderlecht/Brussels.

Belgians being interested in the NGV technology can already rent CNG vehicles from NGVA Europe member Ecofillco in Anzegem. Ecofillco also provides a private CNG refuelling station for their customers.
