NGV racing: Demonstrative performance of Volkswagen CNG Sciroccos & official presentation of first Spanish CNG racing car by EPM Gas Technology

Germany/Sweden/Spain; on 24th May 2009 a Volkswagen Scirocco GT24-CNG EcoFuel has achieved a class victory and finished well-placed amongst the world's best competition at the 2009 Nürburgring 24 hour event. Also two biomethane powered VW Scirocco performed very convincingly at the STCC (Swedish Touring Car Championship) race which took place at the same week-end.

Very interesting, the first Spanish CNG rally competition car, built by NGVA Europe member EPM Gas Technology will be displayed in the fair of GNV Madrid (June 17-19). NGVA Europe member, TÜV Saarland from Germany, will also bring their magnificent Audi A4 B7 Quattro Biogas which beat the Guinness world record to the exhibition.

Two Volkswagen Sciroccos GT24-CNG EcoFuel (see picture) have achieved a class victory and finished well-placed amongst the world's best competition at the 2009 Nürburgring 24 hour event, perhaps the world's toughest circuit. vw-sciroco With innovative technology the GT24-CNG won the category for vehicles with alternative propulsion systems (AT) and in the general classification achieved 17th place overall, ahead of several more powerful cars, such as Porsche or BMW.

Dr. Ulrich Hackenburg, a member of the Management Board from Volkswagen, said the participation of the two Scirocco cars have fully exploited the potential of this low emission technology and exceeded all expectations. "In the 24-hour race we have seen the great potential natural gas poses as a fuel," also says Dr. Timm Kehler, General Manager of NGVA Europe member erdgas mobil.

At the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC) race which took place the same weekend the results for two biomethane powered VW Scirocco (see picture) stcc-biogas_sciroccowere also impressive. In the third of nine STCC events this season one of the Volkswagen Scirocco took an 8th position in a 20 car race. In the STCC the Sciroccos were up against very tough competition. The overall performance of the VW Sciroccos in such premier league racing is a magnificent achievement and can be taken as a proof for the great potential NG/biomethane as a vehicle fuel has to offer.

It is also interesting to recognize that the achievements made by Volkswagen, in the German, as well as in the Swedish racing, had strong financial and promotional backing from E.ON Ruhrgas, the major European gas company and also one of the main shareholders of NGVA Europe member, erdgas mobil from Germany.
