More historic towns go NG/biomethane: 10 new CNG buses for the Spanish city of Toledo

IVECO_Irisbus_jpgThe municipal transport company of the city of Toledo, UNAUTO, has put 10 new NG/biomethane powered urban buses into service. All vehicles are ex factory CNG versions of IVECO’s Irisbus Cityclass line (see picture). With the Irisbus Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and NGVA Europe board member, IVECO, provides a fantastic ecologically and economic benign vehicle, which is especially appreciated in urban and rural areas.

By having purchased ten of today’s best ranking low-pollutant buses, the historic city of Toledo is further developing their commitment to offer more and more cleaner and advanced vehicles. The new NG vehicles now operate in the hilly and historic city center of Toledo (see picture) and help reducing noise and pollution significantly.

All vehicles are filled at a depot where the NG/biomethane compression installation was provided by NGVA Europe member EPM Gas technology (Barcelona, Spain). The filling station can serve all ten vehicles at the same time in less than 2 hours, but also includes a quick-fill CNG compressor where a bus can be refilled in less than 10 minutes. The total contract volume for the compression system installation and the acquisition of the IVECO buses is 3.150.000 Euros.

Other very old Spanish cities like Burgos and Salamanca, as well as many more European cities with historic city centres like Rome, Florence and Verona in Italy or Athens in Greece also follow this successful example and rely on CNG buses for public transport. NGVA Europe is convinced that NG/biomethane will gradually become the preferred urban fuel.

New NGVA Europe Case Study!

Now NGVA Europe will issue a new Case Study on “Experiences with natural gas urban transport buses”, which has been submitted to NGVA Europe by our member the municipal transport company of Madrid, EMT, having one of Europe’s biggest urban CNG fleets in operation (500 buses already!). This Case Study will contain detailed economic and technical information and will be distributed as a special service to all NGVA Europe members.
