| Long Profile |
VITO (Flemish institute for technological research) is a leading independent European research and consulting centre developing sustainable technologies in the area of energy, environment, transport, materials and remote sensing. VITO provides objective research, studies and advice to industry as well as European, national and regional authorities to establish future policies. VITO counts close to 600 highly qualified employees from diverse specializations. The Unit ‘Transition Energy and Environment’ groups 70 researchers who scientifically underpin the transition to a more sustainable society. Its research focuses on an integrated analysis of (i) transport and mobility, (ii) energy use and supply, (iii) resources management, (iv) industrial emissions, (v) living and building and (vi) climate change and land use. The Transport & Mobility research team analyses transport in connection with technology, energy and the environment. The research team has been working since many years in the fields of clean vehicles and transport modelling: exhaust emissions, technical follow-up of the market, monitoring of vehicles, fleet consultancy, green car taxation, emission modelling, activity-based modeling, … One of the relevant projects to mention is the European FLEAT-project (IEE 2007-2010, coordinator: VITO). In this projects measures to increase energy efficiency were implemented in 37 vehicle fleets. VITO developed and applied a monitoring and evaluation framework, which provided amongst others insight in CO2-savings. Another relevant European project is the PREMIA project (DG TREN, 2004-2007). In this project the effectiveness of support programs to facilitate and secure the market introduction of alternative motor fuels (incl. natural gas) in the EU was investigated. In the recent years a lot of experience has been gained in on board monitoring of vehicles regarding energy consumption, and driving and travel behaviour. VITO covers the whole chain of on board monitoring: installation of on board units, CANbus analysis, data capturing and transmission to our back office, processing of collected data and communication of results by means of interactive web-applications.
