Gasum’s biogas first Nordic Ecolabelled fuel in Finland

NGVA Europe member Gasum has launched the first Nordic Ecolabelled vehicle fuel − biogas − in the Finnish market. Biogas is produced from renewable raw materials such as household, retail and industry biowaste and its climate impacts are considerably lower than those of conventional fuels.

Nordic Ecolabelled vehicle fuel is better for the climate and the environment than traditional fuels. Its raw materials are produced sustainably and its carbon dioxide emissions are low. Greenhouse gas emissions from Nordic Ecolabelled fuel are on average 45% lower than those from conventional fuels over the product’s entire life cycle. Strict restrictions are also imposed on the amount of energy used in production.

The Nordic Ecolabel requires that the quality of the fuel is as high as that of conventional fuels. There are also strict limit values for exhaust gas emissions. Hazardous particulate pollutant emissions from Nordic Ecolabelled biogas are also considerably lower than those from other fuels such as diesel.

Gasum’s biogas is manufactured at the Kymen Bioenergia Oy biogas facility. The gas is upgraded by KSS Energia Oy by removing its impurities, after which Gasum takes care of its sales and distribution. Biogas is sold at Gasum's filling stations in southern and southeastern Finland. It can be used as a fuel for all vehicles that also run on natural gas.

”The production of renewable fuels based on local raw materials is still rather small in scale in Finland. The Nordic Ecolabel wishes to contribute towards their production. Produced from waste-based raw materials, biogas is one of the best renewable fuels because of its small climate impacts,” says Nordic Criteria Manager Karin Bergbom from Ecolabelling.
