Dutch construction company Ballast Nedam, a member of NGVA Europe, already operates more than 150 natural gas vehicles (NGVs) in its fleet. As a company rule, all new commercial passenger cars and delivery vans will drive on natural gas if possible.
Clean and sustainable
Driving on natural gas reduces the emissions of CO2, NOx and particulates. “Driving on this clean, sustainable fuel contributes to the achievement of our environmental goals (Carbon Awareness Program). Besides, it is a good start in the transition to biomethane”, says Joost Jansen of Ballast Nedam IPM. “We are familiar with natural gas and biomethane as vehicle fuels because we develop and install turnkey CNG and LNG filling stations in Europe and (together with sister company CNG Net) are active in the field of investment in and exploitation of CNG-filling stations in the Netherlands. Sixty-five percent of the 50 operational public filling stations have been realized by our company. Moreover, we develop biomethane production projects to close the recycling chain from biomass to vehicle fuel.” Ballast Nedam’s goal is to realize a country-wide network of CNG-filling stations in the Netherlands by the end of 2012.

Car lease program
Ballast Nedam has a strong belief in the future of natural gas, in combination with the transition to biomethane as a vehicle fuel. Driving on these fuels also fits into its mission in terms of corporate social responsibility. For the past few months, the company’s car lease program has been modified to favour NGVs. In short, this boils down to the fact that every new Ballast Nedam car should be a NGV, unless there is a very good reason for not choosing one (there is not an NGV model available for every specific application).
In this way, Ballast Nedam is heading towards clean and sustainable mobility in the Netherlands. The company is optimistic about the growth of the number of NGVs in its fleet and another 50 NGVs have been ordered for employees.
