Ballast Nedam IPM makes Dutch cities greener: New green gas bus depots for Nijmegen and The Hague

bn_ipm_logoNGVA Europe member and Dutch market leader in the field of manufacturing natural gas and biomethane filling stations, Ballast Nedam IPM, is further developing its commitment to make cities in the Netherlands greener and is now responsible of two prestigious projects in the cities of The Hague and Nijmegen.
The overall goal of Ballast Nedam is to provide 250 public refuelling possibilities in operation before 2012.

novio_001_4.webjpgThe newest project of Ballast Nedam is carried out in the Arnhem Nijmegen city region where the public transport company Novio has purchased 75 new natural gas buses (see picture). The system to refuel the 75 busses will only need a maximum refuelling time of 7 minutes per bus by using the power of three compressors with a total capacity of 1800 Nm³ of natural gas per hour. The Nijmegen councillor Jan van der Meer and Erik Kemink of Ballast Nedam subsidiary CNG Net signed the contract for the construction and operation of this natural gas filling station already in June 2009. Ballast Nedam IPM is responsible for the design, engineering, licensing process and construction of the entire filling station, all in accordance with the standards and guidelines specified by the relevant laws and regulations.

nijmegen_016In 2008 the public transport company HTM Personenvervoer and the municipality of The Hague also decided to make their city cleaner. In 2009 a total number of 45 urban buses have already been replaced by NGVs. By 2011 all 135 public transport buses of HTM will only use NG/biomethane as a vehicle fuel. As a result Ballast Nedam was asked to take on responsibility for the turnkey realisation of a filling station for CNG on HTM’s premises as well as the exploitation and all-round maintenance of the station which, with a capacity of 2 x 3000 Nm3 per hour, is one of the largest in Europe.

Since December 14, the HTM busses are filled with 100% green gas (biomethane). This is possible because of cooperation between the energy trading company Essent, Ballast Nedam and HTM.

Ballast Nedam IPM green gas filling station in Nijmegen

It is planned that the entire bus fleet of HTM will only be using green gas in the future. Thereby, The Hague, which is also seat of the Dutch government, can achieve a reduction of round about 16.000 ton CO2 over the next two years is possible, HTM says (see apress release at the bottom). "This is unique. HTM will have the first carbon neutral fleet in the world", Dirk le Clerq, General Manager of HTM is pointing out."
