According to NGVA Europe member, NGV System Italia, (the Italian association for natural gas and biomethane in transport) the average monthly passenger car registrations for NG/biomethane (in Italian "Metano") powered vehicles in Italy were 14.200 during the period January through July, 2009.

ACEA (the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association) on 15th September published statistics stating that the total Italian passenger car registrations during July were 205.665 units (see press release at the bottom). This, in combination with the numbers shown below, means that in July NGVs in Italy accounted for 6.9 % of all new vehicles (OEMs 6.2 %, retrofits 0.7 %).

2009 NGV registrations in Italy

Month OEM Retrofit Total Cumul
January 8.704 1.576 10.280 10.280
February 13.587 2.011 15.598 25.878
March 9.887 2.026 11.913 37.791
April 14.419 1.690 16.109 53.900
May 14.581 1.520 16.101 70.081
June 13.655 1.241 14.896 84.977
July 12.805 1.410 14.215 99.192

One of the reasons for this fantastic development is of course the fact that the Italian NGV industry is continuously introducing new NGV models to the market. In this manner, NGVA Europe member and Italian car manufacturer, Fiat Automobiles, also fulfils its role as Europe's leading OEM for NGV passenger cars. Two brand new bi-fuel (methane and petrol) models released are the Fiat Punto Evo and the Fiat Qubo (go to NGVA Europe press release).
